Federal Permit Secured

To construct and operate the Kings Mountain Mine, Albemarle must secure a series of permits from the City of Kings Mountain, the state of North Carolina and federal agencies. In late March, the project completed the federal portion of that permitting process.

"Federal approval is a noteworthy milestone in the project’s permitting process as we continue to engage with local and state entities to obtain their respective approvals,” said Scott Hutchins, senior director, business readiness for Albemarle.

Responsible Mining at Kings Mountain: Minimizing Lighting Impacts

Albemarle's proposed project plan includes a comprehensive lighting strategy designed to reduce light pollution. Along with the use of berms and buffers around the project perimeter, the site's lighting is designed to limit the visible glow to adjacent properties.

Lithium in our Lives: Grid Storage

Grid storage, also known as battery energy storage systems, is becoming a critical part of modern energy infrastructure. These systems store electricity when supply exceeds demand and release it when energy is needed most, helping balance the electrical grid and improve reliability.

Lithium iron phosphate batteries are one of the leading technologies used in grid storage today, with most systems relying on lithium-based chemistries, including lithium iron phosphate. These batteries are valued for their efficiency, long cycle life and ability to scale for large applications. As a global leader in lithium production, Albemarle helps enable the performance and reliability of grid storage through the supply of high-quality lithium materials.

Grid storage also supports overall grid stability by helping manage frequency and voltage, reducing strain on infrastructure and supporting energy transition at scale.

In addition to supplying lithium, Albemarle supports the energy storage ecosystem through advanced materials and technologies that enhance battery safety and performance, including solutions designed to improve thermal stability and reduce fire risk.

As demand for reliable and flexible energy continues to grow, grid storage will remain a foundational technology, with lithium at the center of that transition.

Meet Zach, Chemical Operator

Meet Zach, a chemical operator at Albemarle Kings Mountain.

For Zach, the Kings Mountain site has always felt like home. After growing up visiting his dad at the plant and even doing a little fishing on the property years ago, he’s now building his own career with the company.

Past Events

Foldscope Teacher Training

Albemarle was pleased to support last week's Foldscope training workshop for local educators at the Moore Advanced Technology Center.

The workshop, hosted in partnership with Cleveland Community College and NC BioNetwork, brought together teachers for hands-on training using Foldscopes, a low-cost, paper-based microscope, making it easier to explore microscopy and enhance science learning in the classroom.

HealthCare Foundation of Cleveland County Gala

Celebrating their 10th annual gala, Albemarle is grateful for the partnership and opportunity to support the non-profit's ongoing efforts in advancing health and wellness in our community.

Future Events

Kings Mountain Farmers' Market

The season grand opening is April 25th, 8 a.m.- noon. In addition to offering local food, the grand opening will feature a butterfly release, educational programs, giveaways from Albemarle and more.
