Lithium in our Lives: Golf Balls |
|
Next time you pick up a golf ball, you might not think about lithium, but it’s helping improve your game. Many modern golf balls are made with a lithium-based polymer cover. This durable outer layer is produced using lithium hydroxide, which enhances the strength and abrasion resistance of the ball.
What does that mean in practice? Greater durability, longer-lasting performance and more consistent play. It’s a small but powerful example of how lithium shows up in everyday products. |

Responsible Mining at Kings Mountain: Repurposing Historic Tailings for New Uses
For more than four decades, the Kings Mountain Mine produced lithium-bearing spodumene ore, leaving behind non-ore-bearing materials known as spodumene tailings. Albemarle scientists reevaluated the tailings and discovered their chemical profile closely resembled minerals commonly used in ceramic and brick manufacturing.
Today, the repurposed material, known as sandspar, is being used by ceramic and brick manufacturers across the region. Through testing and collaboration, sandspar was validated as a safe and reliable option that can improve product quality, reduce transportation impacts and support lower greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative reflects Albemarle's commitment to integrating sustainability into every aspect of its operations while contributing to a more circular economy.
Watch the video to learn how historic tailings are finding new life in products used every day.

Albemarle was proud to support local students through two scholarship initiatives this spring.
Through a contribution to the Cleveland County Schools Educational Foundation, Albemarle helped recognize academic achievement among Cleveland County Schools seniors. This year, community businesses and individual donors awarded $1,000 scholarships to 205 graduating seniors who earned a 4.0 GPA or higher and ranked in the top 20% of their graduating class.
Later in May, the company presented its second annual Albemarle Community Scholarship to Kings Mountain High School senior Sarah Bouchard. Sarah received a renewable $5,000 scholarship and plans to pursue a degree in chemistry at a four-year university. Congratulations to Sarah and all of this year's scholarship recipients as they begin their next chapter.
Watch the video below for highlights from the Kings Mountain High School awards ceremony, where Sarah received the 2026 Albemarle Community Scholarship.
