September 2026

Rock Sampling Program

As part of ongoing project planning, Albemarle will be conducting a temporary sampling program to help gather information about rock material from the Kings Mountain site. This work will support future planning and evaluation efforts.

During the sampling period, residents may notice increased truck traffic, some noise and daytime activity at the former movie theater site.

Lithium in our Lives: Friday Night Lights

As football season kicks off, we're reminded of some of the ways Albemarle products help support the technologies that make game day possible. Lithium-powered batteries are in everything from stadium lighting to wireless broadcasting equipment. Albemarle products are in food safety solutions that protect against pathogenic bacteria and help keep the popcorn, pizza and wings coming. Medical devices and wearable technologies powered by our lithium and cesium salts help athletic trainers prevent and address player injuries. We also produce flame retardants that safeguard wiring and circuit boards in A/V equipment, scoreboards and televisions, helping protect people and property from fire hazards.

Responsible Mining at Kings Mountain: Tailings Storage

Albemarle’s tailings management strategy for the Kings Mountain Mine reflects a commitment to environmental stewardship and operational safety. The plan incorporates dry stacking of filtered tailings, a method that significantly reduces water usage and enhances site stability.

We are also exploring secondary uses for tailings, including potential applications such as bathroom tiles or industrial backfill. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to meet the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) standards, ensuring transparency, community engagement and reduced environmental impact.

Volunteer Spotlight: Sherri, Regional Quality Manager

Sherri, regional quality manager at the Kings Mountain Mine, is in her fourth year supporting Project Scientist. Sherri enjoys seeing students' interest in STEM grow through special activites. She also values the opportunity to introduce students to the work happening at Kings Mountain and show them how STEM can lead to future career opportunities.

Geology Lessons at Local Summer Camps

This summer, our community education specialist, Margot Plonk, visited with over 200 children across Cleveland County through eight hands-on geology lessons designed to spark curiosity about science and the world around us.

A special thank you to the schools, organizations and youth programs that worked with us to make these experiences possible for our local youth.

Reading is Fundamental

Last month, our site staff had the opportunity to support the non-profit Reading is Fundamental by packing 200 bags of books that were delivered to students at James Love Elementary.
