Last year we awarded 21 local grants in honor of the Kings Mountain 150th Anniversary. This year, we will continue to highlight a few recipients every month to follow the contributions they are making to their communities:
Common Ground Cafe
Common Ground Cafe, an organization dedicated to providing nutritious meals to seniors in need, is using these funds to expand its services from Shelby to the Kings Mountain area, addressing food insecurity among senior residents. Earl Scruggs Center Exhibit on Lithium |
This cultural center in Shelby used its grant to support a new exhibit, "Healing Waters: A History of Cleveland County's Mineral Springs," which opened this week. The exhibit explores the area's unique geology, including the history of lithium, a critical natural resource found in the region.
Visitors can learn about lithium’s role in everything from early versions of soft drinks to today's modern drone technology, highlighting its diverse applications over time. The exhibit also features an interactive section for children, where they can outfit themselves as Albemarle employees and take part in hands-on science projects, making learning both fun and engaging.
"Healing Waters" will run through the year, and Cleveland County residents receive free admission on Saturdays. |

Mine Pit Odor Update |
Although odors have not been observed near the mine pit for several weeks as compared to the "turn over" of the mine pit water that occurred late last year, the project team recently installed yellow buoy-like objects on the surface of the water as previously planned. The objects are designed to disrupt wind-caused movement of water and further prevent the continued mixing of the upper and lower levels of the water remaining in the mine pit. |
|
|
Until the mine pit can be fully dewatered later this year, intermittent odors are possible, and Albemarle expects to continue conducting air monitoring around the mine pit. |
